Press Release: 16 September 2013
Award Winning Rochford Art Trail returns for 2013
Rochford's popular and award-winning Art Trail returns for its fifth year and once again plays host to more than 60 artists who will be exhibiting art, ceramics, photography and craft in the town's shops, cafes and businesses from Thursday 19 to Saturday 28 September.
This year's Trail includes a pop-up arts and crafts market, guided walks and a whole day of workshops and demonstrations from a selection of Trail artists.
The Rochford Art Trail is an established event on the Essex cultural calendar and draws visitors from across the Eastern region to explore the medieval market town of Rochford by following a Trail of art in 35 different venues.
The impact the Trail makes to business and the local community has been recognised with a 'Towns Alive' award, where Rochford picked up the top prize in the 'Culture and Environment' Category for the East Region in 2013. As a result, the Rochford Art Trail is now in the running for a national award, with winners being announced later this year.
Finally, a one-off special project called Rochford Art Collector Series will take place during this year's Trail. Visitors to the Trail can collect and keep their very own piece of original art from a series of seven commissioned artworks.

£10,000 grant to help local artists hit the Trail!
Rochford District Council has been awarded nearly £10,000 by the national body responsible for developing the arts for an exciting new project to inspire local artists and give visitors to this year’s Rochford Art Trail the opportunity to own a piece of free art.

Arts Council England has awarded the Council £9,449 through its Grants for the Arts programme, which is funded through the National Lottery. The funding will help fund a project called the Rochford Art Collector Series which will come to the fore during this year’s Rochford Art Trail (19-28 September).

Arts Council England is the national body which champions, develops and invests in arts and culture. It supports a range of activities across the arts including museums, theatres, digital art, dance, music and literature.

As part of the funding given to Rochford, six artists will be commissioned to create new artworks that will be freely available to the public to collect and keep by visiting shops and businesses during the week-long Trail in September.

A seventh artwork will be created by young people at the Wakering Young People’s Community Partnership and their participation in the project will be recognised with an Arts Award.

The Rochford Art Collector Series will be an additional feature of the already-successful Art Trail which celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2013. Over the last four years since it started in 2009 the Trail has become a huge success, regularly attracting visitors from across the region to the historic market town of Rochford.

The aim of the project is to give visitors and residents the opportunity to own a piece by a local artist, and also help support local businesses through the Art Trail.

Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Arts, Councillor Keith Gordon, said: “To have been awarded a grant by the national body responsible for championing arts in this country is a huge achievement. The funding process is very competitive with projects nationally all applying, so for Rochford to be awarded nearly £10,000 is a big achievement. The funding from Arts Council England means the bar is set very high in terms of demonstrating that the project is of the very highest artistic standards. Locally, it means that we will now be able to continue to support the local arts community through small artist commissions that are open for applications now. I am looking forward to getting my own piece of artwork when the Rochford Art trail comes alive again in September!”

Local artists Stuart Bowditch and Damien Robinson who came up with the concept for Rochford Art Collector Series said “We've devised the project to benefit artists, audiences and trail venues alike.  The artists will be commissioned to create new work which will find its way into the homes and hearts of a new audience. Art lovers will be able to start - or add to - their collection with seven new pieces of work. Local businesses will also benefit from the added footfall as people explore the historic town centre in search of the art.”
