We regularly advertise various events around the County organised by the Essex Wildlife Trust and recently we carried their advertisement for the opening of the new Visitor Centre at Abberton Reservoir, south west of Colchester.

As we happened to be in that area over this past weekend (end June 2012) we decided to drop in to see what it was like. A week earlier, we were told about 1800 people passed through the building at its opening (although it has been operative since March). On our visit it was a haven of peace and tranquility, a place of beauty, well worth dropping in if you are in the area.
The very modern looking centre has an adequate car park (head south out of Colchester on the B1026 signposted for Layer and about 4 miles out the reservoir is obvious, off the new road.
Inside the building, passing the entrance desk, as you move on through the shop,  the far side is a viewing area, where binoculars  are provided for ranging the water-land outside. If you wish you can walk around the deck outside overlooking water, fen (?) and more water and to the rear of the building is a picnic area (see below)
The land is flat and so this is the country of the ‘big sky’. It is a place for wildlife and peace and quiet!
