‘Arts from the Heart’
Rochford District Council’s Community Safety Team is working with young people in the District to promote healthy relationships and raise awareness of abuse. Working alongside the Rochford District Youth Council, the team has launched a competition aimed at teenagers from local schools and youth groups.

The ‘Arts from the Heart’ competition asks Individuals and/or groups to submit an artistic presentation on the subject of where help can be obtained, and how people can move on and into healthy relationships.

The competition will be split into two categories
• ‘Art’- painting, sculpture, creative writing, poetry, etc
• ‘Performing art’- Music, dancing, drama etc (5-10 min pieces)

Initial submissions will need to be handed in for viewing by photo or video by 31 May 2013 along with written scripts, music and lyrics. These will then be shortlisted and the finalists will be invited to display and perform at a ‘showcase’ that will be held in June.

Rochford District Council’s Domestic Abuse Reduction Officer, Tracey Schneider, said: “We hope that by running this competition we can demonstrate to young people the recognisable qualities of a healthy, happy relationship. By encouraging them to use their imaginations and creativity through the arts we can ensure they understand that abuse or violence within a relationship is not acceptable and should not be tolerated.”

The competition has had great support from local businesses with Shopland Hall Equestrian Centre and The Pink Toothbrush among many others sponsoring the event.

Recognition Express, a locally based promotions company, have also kindly donated the personalised prize trophies to be awarded to the winners and wristbands for everyone who enters the competition.

Those wishing to take part in the project will be provided with information, guides, visits, case studies and project sessions. Further information can be obtained from Tracey Schneider, Community Safety Team, Rochford District Council on 01702 318021 or by email at communitysafety@rochford.gov.uk
