So by now you have probably opened all your presents. All those expensive computers, tablets, jewellery etc. Before you start to throw receipts and packaging away...take the opportunity to write down serial numbers and take photographs of your valuables.

A recent article in a national paper explained insurance companies are unlikely to pay out for stolen items without proof of ownership.

Most UK police forces now recommend using www.immobilise.com to register your property.

The 5 most wanted items by burglars and thieves are (1) portable computing devices (2) smart phones (3) jewellery and cash (4) bicycles (5) home entertainments systems and gaming consoles.

Act now and keep it safe.

Items have been found that appear to be from a theft from motor vehicle. These items are likely to be possibly Christmas shopping, clothes and maybe presents. Items are in carrier bags from the shops they were purchased from. If you, or you know of someone who has had these sort of items stolen and it has not been reported, contact Essex Police on 101.

A very dangerous craze has been witnessed in Rochford and may involve your child! Teenagers riding pedal cycles are being ridden at speed between moving vehicles. The youths ride up the bank onto the Freight House car park before cycling down again at speed weaving in between the traffic forcing motorists to slam on their brakes.

The footage received by police shows at least five bikes go into the road and a collision forces one youth to fall.

It is only a matter of time before a young person is killed or seriously injured.

Please advise your children on the dangers of the road. Don't let your child be the one that loses their life.

As technology becomes more sophisticated so do the efforts criminals go to; to steal your property. Devices are available relatively cheaply on the internet and can be used to bypass vehicle security to unlock doors; even start your car. Manufacturers are doing what they can to increase security - but if one can make it; one can break it. With this in mind we all need to make it as difficult as we can to reduce the chances of becoming a victim.

Removing valuable items from your vehicle is a start and doesn't cost anything.

Improving lighting around your driveway could deter a crime. LED lighting is the best and by adding CCTV is an excellent deterrent. LED lighting is really cheap to run and can be left on all night.

Ultimately if you have the option; vehicles should be kept in a secured and alarmed garage overnight.
