Essex Police are looking for members of the community to become Active Citizens. The volunteers should be a movable group of reliable and professional people, keen to make a difference in the community and become a valuable local resource. They should be a visual deterrent and a link between the public and Police, to achieve more cohesive communities, interact with residents and help to make Policing more transparent. If you are interested in Volunteering for Essex Police or want more information then seethe link at - Police Volunteers You can emaill your interest to active.citizen@essex.pnn.police.uk

Make a difference in your local community.  Victim Support helps people affected by crime feel stronger, understood and able to move forward with their lives. Last year in Essex, our team of trained volunteers and staff supported over 3,000 people affected by crime across the county. We are looking for reliable volunteers with great listening skills, who have 4 hours or more to spare a week, to join our team in Essex. We will train you to offer practical and emotional support to people affected by crime. Whether you want to help people in your local community, give something back, or learn new skills, this could be the rewarding role you are looking for. Successful applicants could be on our next four day fully accredited training course in Chelmsford this September (21st, 22nd, 29th & 30th). Interested? Find out more by emailing essexvolunteering@victimsupport.org.uk or calling the Essex Service Delivery team on 01277 357557

The current threat to the UK from international terrorism has been raised to CRITICAL.  This means that an attack in the UK is regarded as ‘imminent’ but at this time there is no specific information linking any threat to Essex. You are asked to be alert but there is no reason for you to be alarmed. If you are concerned, call us on 101 or, in an emergency, call 999.  You can also report any suspicious behaviour of activity to the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321.   We train and prepare for incidents like this. We are working tirelessly with our partners and communities - to towards our highest priority keep the county safe.

Action Fraud has received the first reports of Tech-Support scammers claiming to be from Microsoft who are taking advantage of the global Wanna Cry ransomware attack.  One victim fell for the scam after calling a ‘help’ number advertised on a pop up window. The window which wouldn’t close said the victim had been affected by WannaCry Ransomware.  The victim granted the fraudsters remote access to their PC after being convinced there wasn’t sufficient anti-virus protection. The fraudsters then installed Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, which is actually free, and took £320 as payment. It is important to remember that Microsoft’s error and warning messages on your PC will never include a phone number. Additionally Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support.  Any communication they have with you must be initiated by you.

PROTECTION / PREVENTION ADVICE:  How to protect yourself:

• Don't call numbers from pop-up messages.
• Never allow remote access to your computer.
• Always be wary of unsolicited calls. If you’re unsure of a caller’s identity, hang up.
• Never divulge passwords or pin numbers.
• Microsoft or someone on their behalf will never call you.

If you believe you have already been a victim
• Get your computer checked for any additional programmes or software that may have been installed.

• Contact your bank to stop any further payments being taken

If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, please report it to Action Fraud at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk

Unwanted phone calls can be a real nuisance
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls.  This service doesn't work with businesses trying to contact you from outside the UK

If you receive a cold call, stay calm and don’t let the caller intimidate you or pressure you with ‘One day only’ offers.

Never reveal your name, address and financial detailed. If called report the call to TPS   http://www.tpsonline.org.uk

10/5/17

• Say NO cold callers.  • Put a NO COLD CALLER sign on your front door with wording such as: NO COLD CALLING  Uninvited callers will be reported

8/5/17

NOT SURE? Don’t open the door!
When traders turn up on your doorstep, they;
• May say they are in the area and have spotted a problem with your home or garden
• May offer to carry out work cheaply but then charge an extortionate price after it has been completed.
Report any crimes or suspicious persons/behaviour/incidents to the police on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency.

Essex Police have been made aware of a telephone scam, whereby elderly / vulnerable residents have been contacted via telephone from a person purporting to be from the Metropolitan Police Fraud Squad. The caller has attempted to convince the victim to withdraw a large sum of cash from their bank and leave it in a carrier bag in a specific area, where it will be collected.
Fortunately on this occasion, the victim became suspicious and refused to complete the transaction. However it should be noted that the caller has made great efforts to convince the victim they are genuine and have even supplied a fake incident reference number.
If you care for an elderly or vulnerable person please remind them that Police would never contact them in this manner and ask them to withdraw cash from their bank, irrespective of how convincing they are. This also applies to legitimate businesses and traders, who would never conduct business in this manner.
If you notice large sums of money being withdrawn from their bank and you think they are being preyed upon by unscrupulous scammers please contact Essex Police on 101 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 (
http://www.actionfraud.police.uk). If you have any information on the perpetrators of this activity you can call Crimestoppers UK on 0800 555 111.

Following DVSA clarification used car buyers are urged to check MOT details online – the paper certificate is too susceptible to forgery.

Following a clarification by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), we are urging used car buyers to check MOT details online, rather than relying on the paper certificate. In response to a Freedom of Information request the DVSA’s MOT Scheme Management Team confirmed: “…the view of DVSA is that the test certificate is a receipt style certificate and it is the database holds the authorative record VSA advice is that if a customer has concerns to the validity of the certificate or wishes to, they can confirm the details via the gov.uk website.” “This important clarification should signal a change in consumer best practice. Most car buyers accept the paper MOT at face value, but 25 years of investigating cloned and clocked vehicles has taught us not to be so trusting. The first thing we do with any claim is check the MOT on the primary source, the government website. It is a great free service and you can see at a glance the recorded mileages going back years and any advisory notes on the condition of the vehicle. Any discrepancy between this data and the paper certificate should set alarm bells ringing. Vehicle crime has become highly sophisticated but when it comes to paper MOTs a lot of the tactics are rudimentary, commonly simple photocopies with the mileage altered. In one recent case, someone had downloaded  the sample certificate from the government website, filled it in and passed it off as genuine. They should at least put a watermark on that because they’ve inadvertently provided a handy resource for fraudsters.”  MoT history – https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history MoT (current) & tax – https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax
