Hockley Woods ‘Cache in - Trash Out’

5/5/2015

Hockley Woods recently played host to a new style of geocaching, with participants collecting litter whilst solving the clues.

Braving the spring showers, volunteers worked together to complete the modern-day treasure hunt whilst collecting large amounts of litter around Hockley Woods. The unique event was organised by Mega Essex Geocache, a voluntary group which is arranging similar events across Essex, including the 8th Annual UK Mega Event which will take place in August.

Their organiser, Simon Butler, said: “Geocaching is all about getting people and families out into the countryside and appreciating their environment. The concept of ‘Cache in Trash out’ is about us as geocachers trying to keep the countryside clean and give something back to nature so it encourages people to collect litter as they're on their walks.

“The UK Mega Essex committee were only too pleased to organise a CITO event at Hockley woods and we were very grateful to the geocaching community for turning out in force despite the rain and for gathering a large quantity of rubbish from the woods”.

Rochford District Council’s Assistant Director for Environmental Services, Marcus Hotten, said: "A modern mix of orienteering and treasure hunting, Geocaching is a great way to explore your local open space. The volunteers showed that when you work together you can make a big difference in a small amount of time. Their efforts are truly appreciated”.
