(Mothers Day Parade & Harrison the Guide Dog)

Organisations 4th Rochford Scouts

4th Rochford Group attend Mothers Day Church Parade!!! 6th March 2016

Spring was definitely in the air, although still quite chilly with a clear blue sky, for the great turnout of Beavers, Cubs & Scouts to celebrate Mothers Day at the St. Andrew’s Church Parade in Rochford.

Over 20 children paraded with their parents and several Leaders to attend a lovely Service given by the Rev. Kim Lepley. The kids then presented their Mums with pots of flowering primroses as a “thank you” to them.

4th Rochford Cubs meet Harrison the Guide Dog!!!

Friday 11th March 2016

35 Cubs had a very informative, but fun meeting recently to earn their “Disability Awareness Badge”. A local blind lady, Christine Dunn, well known to the people of Rochford, came along to the Cub Meeting with her Guide Dog, Harrison.

She did a 40 minute question and answer session with the kids, who asked some very sensible questions and some funny ones too! (i.e. “Can Harrison type on the computer?”) Even the Leaders learnt something new!  The children all got a chance to have a cuddle with Harrison, who took all the fuss and attention in his stride! They presented him with some dog treats and a squeaky burger toy too, which he was very happy with!!!

Even one little lad, who was terrified of dogs, could feel Harrison’s calmness and plucked up the courage to feed him, which was a wonderful achievement! The evening wasn’t just about being blind, but about all disabilities, so after Christine had left, the children were taught how to spell their names in British Sign Language and to say the “Cub Scout Promise” too. They were also set the challenge of drawing a picture using only their feet!

The children also discussed and learnt about all the different challenges and problems people with disabilities face each day and how they cope with certain tasks with or without help from various tools. The evening ended by playing a senses game, where one Cub was blindfolded and the other kids had to complete a mini assault course, being as quiet as possible, so he did not detect them approaching him

All the children were amazing and earned their “Disability Awareness Badge”, so a great result from a wonderful and informative evening!
