Changes to Market Square Plans

Your comments lead to Rochford Market Square plans change.

Plans for the future of Rochford Market Square have been changed in direct response to residents’ feedback.

This follows a consultation between March and May this year, which included having an exhibition stall at Rochford Market. Two options were presented, but following your feedback both plans have been dropped in favour of one that better reflects local views.

The two options initially suggested each took different approaches to the Market Square. However, whilst neither option involved complete pedestrianisation, responses to the public consultation made clear just how important it is to have car parking available to businesses and visitors. As such, an alternative option has been drawn up which increases – rather than reduces – the number of parking spaces in the Square.

Proposed changes to the Market Square form part of the Rochford Area Action Plan – the Plan that will set out how future development in the centre of Rochford is managed. This Plan was submitted to Government for examination in November 2013, but following examination hearing sessions options for the Market Square were looked at again.

Proposed changes also include switching the entrance and exit to the parking area in the square, after a number of residents suggested this.

Proposals for the Market Square, along with other changes proposed to the Rochford Area Action Plan as a result of the examination hearing sessions, are set out in the Schedule of Modifications which is now out for public consultation until noon on December 4. The main purpose of the consultation is for people who made comments on the previous version of the Plan to be given a chance to say whether they think their concerns have been addressed. However, anyone may comment on the proposed changes to the Plan and we welcome comments from everyone.

Portfolio Holder for Planning, Councillor Ian Ward, said: “Whilst there were varying views on what should happen with Rochford Market Square, it was clear from the consultation that the majority did not want to see fewer parking spaces in the Square. As such, we’ve drawn up a different proposal that will actually increase the number of car parking spaces.I’m delighted that we could make these changes in direct response to the community’s views, and I really do think it shows that we are here to listen. We’re not narrow-minded when it comes to laying out these types of plans, because we all want what’s best for the District. That being said, it’s often the case that we’re limited as to how far we can go in response to feedback due to Government policies, regulations, and requirements; competing issues; or the fact that there are simply differing views on the same issue.  However, in this case it was clear what people wanted, and we were able to make these changes, which I hope will build a bright future for the Square. I hope people take part in this next consultation because it’s so important that we get this right.”
