Standing Together against Domestic Abuse

Today, Monday June 9 2014, sees the launch of ‘Standing Together’ against domestic abuse, a joint campaign led by Essex County Council and Essex Police, supported by Rochford District Council.

This is the largest domestic abuse campaign of this kind to take place in the county.

We are encouraging the local community to stand with us and take a photograph of their feet and post to facebook or twitter using #tweetyourfeet and #notodomesticabuse.

The campaign brings together Essex County Council, Essex Police, Rochford District Council, district and borough councils, the Essex Police and Crime Commissioner, as well as charities and women’s refuges all of which are standing together to say no to domestic abuse.

The campaign has been put together with the help and support of survivors of domestic abuse, and focuses on the positive difference it has made to women and men who have left abusive relationships.

Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community, Councillor Jo McPherson, said: “I am pleased to be supporting the ‘Standing Together’ campaign to raise awareness about a subject that often remains behind closed doors.  It is really important that we all realise that Domestic Abuse can affect people from all walks of life and can come in many forms; be it physical, psychological, sexual or financial. Those affected need to be able to feel they can report what has happened to them, and get the support they need. It is great that this campaign focuses on the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ and how people can be supported to leave abusive relationships and rebuild their lives.   “I would urge everyone to tweet their feet in support of this campaign – to show that as a community we are standing together against Domestic Abuse.”

In the Rochford District, a J9 project is in place to make it easier for people to report Domestic Abuse. Businesses and shops who participate display the logo to show they are designated as a place which can signpost victims to the help they need.
