New Group to Tackle Flooding Issues

A Flooding Advisory Group will be set up as part of efforts to tackle flood-related issues.

It will see Rochford District Council working closely with Essex County Council, which is the lead local flood authority and highway authority, and other agencies including the Environment Agency, Anglian Water and the Fire Authority, to find cost-effective, innovative solutions to surface water flooding problems in the District.

The group will also consider engineering assessments of flood hotspots; prepare bids for funding and lobby relevant organisations to deliver improvements to infrastructure; and co-ordinate work with local communities on small scale projects involving landowners, volunteers and partner agencies.

Leader of the Council, Terry Cutmore, will chair the group and will determine the need and frequency of meetings to discuss local issues and invite representatives from the relevant organisations and bodies. He said: “We hope this will kick-start some real action relating to flood prevention. It was clearly very traumatic for all those who were flooded out of their homes last August, with the huge amount of disruption and anxiety it has caused to their lives.  The flooding last Summer was exceptional, and the District has fared quite well since compared to the devastation in other areas of the country, but we are keen to do what we can to help prevent flooding issues in the future.”
