The New Terminal Extension Moves On
(June 2013)
Join us on a tour of Phase 1 of the major extension to the airport terminal.
The new Arrivals area is on schedule to be operational by 17 June. However, making your way into the new building at the present moment is very much like walking through a building site. Indeed some of the internal construction area says there is a long way to go before the end of the year, but under less pressure than needed so far.
Compare our picture above, looking down on the building with the one we took back in February and you see the progress made.
Phase 1- the Arrivals area (below  left) - will have enhanced baggage reclaim facilities and much more space for immigration as well as a dedicated domestic arrivals route.

The amount of space for passengers in the security area will increase (Phase 2 - opening October), as will the number of check in desks / baggage drop off points (Phase 3 — opening November). The anticipation, we are told, is that the newly expanded airport will be able to handle 1000 incoming passengers and 1000 outgoing passengers at the same time.

The Departure Lounge will also grow in size to enhance the experience for passengers relaxing and awaiting boarding after security - this 4th and final phase of the project will complete in December 2013.

We observe that until recently the boast has been ‘plane to train in ten minutes’ but this has now gone up to fifteen minutes.
We’re not quibbling because, as our recent article “50 Reasons to use Southend Airport” shows, this is still pretty remarkable and as the airport grows it will still be an excellent service for local passengers, whether it be getting from the plane to the train or to a car park or to awaiting friends doing a ‘pick-up’.

We recently recounted our experience at Gatwick. In a month’s time we’re flying out of Southend, so we’ll tell you how it compares!!!!   And to make it more complicated we’re taking some hold luggage so we’ll see how the baggage handling goes. See you then!
