Talking with Graham Eva   (venue - Dive Odyssea )

One of the newcomers to the 2015 Rochford Art Trail

Rochford Life: Graham, your website says you have been taking photos for thirty years.

Graham:   That’s right, I have. My first camera I got at the age of twelve and I’ve been taking photographs ever since. Obviously on 35mm film in those days. I took a time out and went into video for probably a period of about ten years, and then about four years ago I got back into stills again. Of course it is digital these days so got some new kit and really got back into it and it drove me on to what I am doing today, and it’s all just taken off this year.

RL: You do weddings and commercial stuff much of the time I believe?

Graham: Yes indeed. I’m generally not without a camera of some description or other, when I’m out and if I see an interesting image I’ll take it.

RL: And that’s what take you into art and beyond the usual commercial photography?

Graham: I had never thought of it as art. It was a conversation with one of the Rochford Art Trail organisers, actually about something completely different and she said why don’t you go in for the art trail because the images you do are exactly what we are looking for. So I hadn’t thought of it as art, but just a nice picture

RL: Have you chosen what you are going to display on the Trail?

Graham: Well I’m displaying in the window of Dive Odyssea and I’ve actually got eleven images to go up, so I’ve had to whittle down all my work to eleven, and what I’ve ended up doing is present it as ‘Rochford life’ a little bit; all the images have been taken within five miles of Rochford. They are not all from this year, some are from my archives but they’ve all got a Rochford close connection.

RL: What is it that makes you think when you go out and see something, that s the one to be taken?

Graham: It’s just how I see it. All the images are how I see them in my mind; I know what it is that I want to capture. It may like some of these are, a fantastic light, but then you’ve got to frame it up so that it actually draws the eye into the photograph and actually makes you look at different things. To me a good photograph will make you look at it several times and see different things in it.

RL: So you’re ready for the Trail?

Graham: Well I’ve finally whittled down all my photos to this eleven and made my choice this morning. What I’m also going to do as part of it is create a Rochford Art Trail link on my website and all the ones that didn’t make it into the window will be there for others to see afterwards.

RL: Well, OK, I understand you’re very busy with all your work so I won’t take up any more of your time. I look forward to seeing your work up in Dive Odyssea and who knows, perhaps in some other exhibition in the days to come. Thank you again for your time.
