Jewellery Cleaning
Cleaning your precious memories
Silver
Silver tarnishes under normal conditions coming into contact with the air causes your treasured pieces to turn black, but no need to worry you can easily return them to their previous glory.
- Sometimes a good clean with washing up liquid and a brush will give your jewellery a lift, best not to use soap as this will stick to it and dull the stones.
- Silver dip is the easiest way to clean and remove the blackened tarnish, only immerse in the dip if the piece is just silver and has no stones set into it.
- If you have rings that are set with stones, the best way to clean them is to dip a tooth brush into the liquid and brush the piece. Then rinse in water, and brush again to remove any last pieces of dirt, dry the piece carefully and then polish with a good silver polishing cloth.
- When you have jewellery that has darkened areas or is set with crystals e.g. Marcasite, it is best to just use a silver polishing cloth.
Always ask your local jeweller if you have any questions about the best way to clean a piece.
Most good jewellers will have silver cleaner in stock that you can purchase.
Gold
- Gold doesn’t tarnish like silver, but over time can become dull with contact with household cleaners etc. It will also get scratched with day to day wearing.
- You can improve its shine a little by using a jewellery polishing cloth, but the best way to return its sparkle and shine is to have it polished at your local jewellers.
- They will be able to return it to you looking like a brand new piece.
White Gold
- Popular white gold needs carefully cleaning so as not to damage the rhodium plating; it is also affected by contact with chlorine. Over time your white gold jewellery may need re-rhodium plating; your local jeweller will be able to help with that.
- In the meantime cleaning with mild jewellery cleaner and a soft cloth will help to keep its shine and lustre.
If you are in any doubt about how to clean and look after your precious jewellery collection please go and get advice from your jeweller before attempting to clean it.
