4th Rochford Scouts Gliding Day!!! Saturday 17th November 2018

A group of 10 Scouts were certainly “flying close to the wind” when they had a fantastic day-trip out with a few parents & Leaders, Bill Neobard & Steven Martin to the Gransden Lodge Airfield in Cambridgeshire!!!

Conditions were absolutely perfect for an afternoon of Gliding over the beautiful countryside! First of all though, they had to spend time in the Classroom to study airfield safety, the theory of flight, be able to name all the parts of the aircraft and understand how they worked and do a full pre-flight inspection! It wasn't all study though, as the kids had great fun building and flying their own model gliders, which they then had to test to a height of 30 feet!!!

With supervision from the Hertfordshire Scouts Air Team, flights in the 2 seater gave them at least 20 minutes in the air, 10 minutes of which they actually flew the glider themselves!!! (Under instruction, of course!!!) This fun day out will go towards each child earning their Air Activities Badge Stages 3 & 4. Lots of very proud children & parents! An amazing achievement and it gave the kids so much confidence. It was such a great success that the next Gliding experience has already been planned for March next year with quite a few places already filled!!!
