Talking with Lois Maulkin (venue 8 - March Hares)

One of the newcomers to the 2015 Rochford Art Trail

Rochford Life: Lois, how long have you been doing this sort of artwork?

Gill:  It must be about ten years now, I think. I’ve always done bits and pieces of craft-work, even as a child, Making cards and things like that, but painting furniture that I do now started probably about ten years ago.

RL:  I see you are painting these clocks but I suspect you do more than this?

Lois: That’s right, I do cupboards and picture frames and stool and chairs, and wardrobes. These clocks are the latest thing, works in progress to be complete for the Art Trail

RL: Which is probably why you are exhibiting in March Hares? How are you feeling about the Trail?

Lois: A little bit nervous because it is the first time, but Kerry is a friend so I don’t have any qualms about being there because I have worked a couple of days in the shop. It’s a lovely shop.

RL:  May I ask, are these clocks hand painted or are these stuck on?

Lois: They are all hand painted. If you know the Bloomsbury artists, well they have a house down in Sussex that is open to the public. (see http://www.charleston.org.uk/ )  Each clock is decorated in the style of one of the rooms.

RL:  What prompted you into this sort of work?

Lois: I was at home with four children and I wanted to do something for myself so I took to locking myself away and starting doing this sort of thing and once I started selling things, as well as the shear satisfaction of it, I continued with it. I tend to sell on e-bay. When I moved into this house I needed to focus on decorating it and so this work went on the back burner but this has now rekindled my interest in it. The thing about the Art Trail is that you don’t tend to think about being in it unless someone prompts you – so here I am

RL:  Well, okay, thank you for this Lois. I love the idea of these clocks and I look forward to seeing the finished products in March Hares in a few weeks’ time, perhaps with some of your other things you have here. All the best!
