Unbelievably, the following morning, all the children were up by 6.00am ready for breakfast and on their way again within about half an hour!!!  This time it was a 16 mile trek over the course of the day, taking in beautiful Essex countryside & churches.  Their first stop was at St. Andrew’s Church in Ashingdon, where they learnt about King Canute and the Battle of Assendun. (Photo 5 - below left) Then a beautiful walk across fields (Photo 6 & 7 below centre and right).

On down to Canewdon Congregational Church (Photo 8 -  below, left),  where the kids & adults all heartily tucked into bacon rolls for brunch!!!    Next port of call was to the beautiful village church of St. Mary’s in Stambridge, where they decorated pegs and had refreshments! (Photo 9 - below, centre). The “Happy Hikers” then sang all the way to the 4th Rochford Scout garden, where they learnt lots from a man from the Rochford History Society, had a delicious picnic lunch and decorated china plates. (Photo 10 - below right)

Suitably refreshed, they were on their way again by 4.30pm and set out for St. Mary’s Church in Hawkwell, where it was discovered that lots of people who died from the plague were buried! (Photo 11 - below left)

The last leg of the day’s hike was back to Rochford’s Ark Lane Scouts Campsite, where everyone had burnt off enough calories to enjoy a delicious Pasta Bolognese for supper, followed by traditional songs around the camp fire!!! (Photo 12 - below centre)

Everybody was ready for lights out by 10.30pm!

Sausages for breakfast were served at 8.00am on Sunday morning, setting all the hikers up nicely for their final 5 mile leg of the weekend!  Before they set off at 9.30am all the Cubs were presented with special T-Shirts that were printed with “I walked 27.2 miles”!!! (Photos 13 - above right &  14 - below left)

There was a quick refreshing ice-lolly stop at Belchamps in Hockley, then it was all systems go to reach the Holy Trinity Church in Rayleigh by 12.15pm! (Photo 15 - below centre)

They were greeted by a large crowd of people, all cheering and clapping as they arrived by the entrance to the Church! (Photo 16 - below right)
