London 2012 inspired art exhibition opens
Rochford District Council and Essex County Council are offering you the chance to celebrate one year to go before the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with a special art exhibition at the Rayleigh Windmill.

Fourteen Essex athletes who have the potential to compete in the 2012 Games have been immortalised in art by artists at the stunning display which is on at the Windmill until Sunday 21 August.

The ‘Journey to the Podium’ exhibition is a group show of 14 artists from a variety of disciplines who have been paired with Essex athletes to create a piece of work that marks each athlete’s personal journey to London 2012.

The athletes, including Beijing Olympians Alex O’Connell & Sarah Claxton and 2010 Commonwealth medal winners James Huckle, Alex Dowsett and Chloe Rogers, chose to partake in the arts project as part of their role in promoting sport in Essex through the Team Essex Ambassador scheme. A selection of the finished works will be on display at the Windmill between Wednesday 27 July and Sunday 21 August 2011.

Admission to the Windmill is free and it is open on Wednesdays 10am – 1pm and Saturdays and Sundays 1pm – 4pm

The Windmill closes for private functions.  Planned closures to date include: Sun 31 July and in addition the windmill will not open until 2pm on Sat 20 August.

Please check the opening times prior to visiting as further dates may be added.

It marks our local athletes’ journey to the 2012 Games whilst creating a cultural legacy of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games for the people of Essex to enjoy”.

Councillor Keith Gordon, Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Tourism, Heritage, the Arts, Culture and Business added: “The Rayleigh Windmill is a hidden gem of South Essex which is home to several innovative and creative artistic displays and events each year. I hope visitors to the Windmill enjoy the Journey to the Podium exhibition that celebrates the wealth of sporting talent there is in Essex.”
