New season – New exhibitions – Rayleigh Windmill in 2012
One of the hidden gems of the Rochford District is opening again with another packed programme of exhibitions for you to discover!
To launch the new season of exhibitions at the Rayleigh Windmill, the Chairman of Rochford District Council, Councillor Simon Smith, was joined by Mike Davies from Rayleigh Through the Looking Glass to celebrate the opening. The group has put together the opening exhibition this summer at the Windmill.
The display, called “Titanic, the first 100 years & its Essex Connections”, opens on Sunday 1st April and runs until Wednesday 9th May.
It’s 100 years since the Titanic launched and tragically sank on its maiden voyage. The exhibition features a range of materials as well as the Titanic’s links with many Essex people and places.
It’s one of a number of spectacular showcases at the Windmill this year. As well as the Titanic exhibition, “Sails in the Wind” will display the history of the Windmill through film, oral history recordings and photos while “Rochford District celebrates in 2012” is an exhibition to celebrate the Olympic Torch passing through Rayleigh and includes materials collected through Rochford's Dreams and Memories Olympic Archive project.
For the third year in a row, the Rayleigh Windmill has achieved the Quality Assured Visitor Attraction accreditation from Visit England. In their report, Visit England, the national body that assesses visitor attractions throughout the country, praised the warm welcome offered by the volunteers as well as their enthusiasm and knowledge.
So if you want to explore this hidden gem of South Essex then come down from Sunday 1st April through to and including September on Wednesdays:10am to 1pm and Saturdays and Sundays: 1pm to 4pm.
Please check the website before visiting as the Windmill is sometimes closed for private events www.rochford.gov.uk/windmill
