Rochford residents still top in Recycling in the East of England!
Official figures released by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) yesterday (8 November 2012) show that residents in the Rochford District are still the top recyclers in the East of England!
The figures show that Rochford residents recycled more than two thirds of their waste to achieve a rate of 67.4 per cent.
Rochford are the third best in England, and top in the East of England and the county of Essex. Last year, Rochford’s recycling rate was 65.79 per cent.
Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Mike Steptoe, said: “For a local authority area the size of Rochford to have become the first place in the East of England to recycle more than two thirds of their waste is a stunning achievement. The difference between the top performing authorities in the country is extremely narrow, and I’m heartened to see the Rochford District being one of those top performing areas. We know that our residents are keen recyclers and I would like to thank them for helping us to achieve such high rates. I’d also like to thank the team at Rochford District Council who have worked hard to achieve this milestone. We have never shied away from the fact that we want Rochford to make a difference to our environment and I hope that we see another improvement next year as we look to achieve a rate of over 70 per cent.”
Rochford finished the year with the third highest recycling rate in England behind the Vale of the White Horse District Council (68.7 per cent) and South Oxfordshire District Council (67.9 per cent).
