Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Mike Steptoe said: “It was brilliant to see how well informed our schoolchildren in the District are when it’s comes to recycling. The new artwork on the waste collection vehicles really stands out and the children have obviously put a lot of thought into their entries.
Being the top recycling authority in the country is only possible because of the hard work and effort of our residents of all ages and it’s by working together that we will make sure we remain top in the future”.
In addition to the special prize, the winners also received a £25 Amazon voucher each and a composter for their school. The schools also received a special wall clock and a thermometer, which is made from recycled plastic cups.

Three schoolchildren – three trucks – three winning recycling slogans
To celebrate Rochford District Council officially being the top recycling authority in the country, a special competition was launched for schoolchildren across the District to say thank you.
We asked youngsters to come up with a design and slogan about what the Council being named the top recycling authority in the country meant to them. The prize? A chance to see their pictures and wording displayed on the side of the collection vehicles that travel around the District.
We had a massive response and hundreds of entries with inspiring thoughts about recycling and the environment. It was extremely difficult to choose just three winners!
During National Recycling Week on Tuesday (19th June), the winners got the chance to see their winning designs on the side of SITA UK’s collection vehicles.

Ethen Adams (winner age 12-16 category) from Sweyne Park School;
Ethen got his inspiration for the picture by looking at the Recycling pages on the Council’s website. His mum said that when he was younger, Ethen loved looking out for the collection vehicles, and so he is really pleased his design will be featured on the side of them.

Lucy May (winner age 9-11 category) from Holt Farm Junior School
Lucy looked at the images already on the collection vehicles to help her with ideas. Her picture represents many different people carrying out recycling which helps to influence and encourage the community to be keen recyclers. She is also a keen recycler at home and thinks it’s very important.
Adam Vickers (winner age 5-8 category) from Holt Farm Junior School and Second Hawkwell Beavers Group
Adam’s design show him recycling as this is his job at home for which he gets paid 10p. He thinks it’s important to recycle otherwise there would be piles of rubbish, and it’s always better to use things again rather than making things from new materials.
