Follow Up, the Wedding Room, and more  (Spring 2011)
At the end of February, JJW Designs launched  a small extension of their main shop, "The Wedding Room", with a new range of Wedding, Prom and Mother-of-the-Bride jewellery, blending the traditional with up-to-date and vintage style collections, using fresh water pearls and sparkling Swarovski crystals together with Murano glass and sterling silver. The Wedding Room has a beautiful collection and extensive colour pallet for you to select a design to perfectly compliment your outfit or have it handmade to your exact requirements.

That was what we were told by e-mail while we were in the USA for two weeks, and we dutifully added a page for them in the magazine from the other side of the world. But Rochford Life is all about personal contact, which is why we prefer to talk to and interview people, and so we had to go and see for ourselves just what had been done.
When we first interviewed Julie and Diane, we were almost overwhelmed by the beauty of the shop and its wares - glass, glass and more glass, and lighting that takes you completely by surprise in the olde worlde buildings of West Street.

When we eventually got around to visiting the shop again, the extended ‘Wedding Room’ was not a disappointment, with exposed brickwork and exposed roof timbers continuing to add yet a further dimension to what was already a beautiful interior.

We had already been won over by the style of beautiful and unusual glass jewellery and the new room only enhances the range for potential customers.
Returning to the shop allowed us to look afresh at it as a whole and again take in the beauty that is here, hidden away in Rochford. To the rear of the shop, now behind the Wedding area, is Diane’s work area where glass and metal come together to form the contents of the many showcases. The customer is spoilt for choice.

As we found out on our first visit, Julie and Diane, regularly visit Venice to see the local work and talk with their counterparts working with Merano glass in its home locality. They tell me they have just returned from such a trip and will be expecting new pieces to arrive from there within a few weeks, to be added to the existing stock, some pieces of which has already come from there, as well as the glass for Diane to work on. It will be interesting to see the new pieces when they arrive.
This sort of jewellery is rarely found on the High Street and it is fitting that it is displayed in a setting that only an old town like Rochford presents. The crucial question, for the future of the business, will be, will the customers ‘out there’ find this gem tucked away here in a little narrow street in Rochford.  We hope they will.

The goal of Rochford Life magazine is to simply display the shops, businesses, clubs and organisations of Rochford to Rochford and further afield, but it is in such a shop as JJW Designs that we really fall down on our job, because usually we use photos purely to add interest to a page and give just a hint of what is here. Thus we do not employ either a professional photographer or a quality camera, and in such a shop as this we find ourselves rethinking our strategy: a ‘simple camera’ does not do what this shop deserves! Fine glass, mostly behind glass cabinets, cannot be picked out adequately by a less than a professional lens. For the quality, you MUST go to their own web-site.
The more time you take, the more you realise what is here in the beauty of this place. Is it cheap? Not if you compare it with some of the ‘stuff’ you find on the High Street perhaps, but here you pay for beauty, unusualness and even uniqueness.
As we said, the pictures, don’t do it justice; you really must come in and see it!
Having now visited both the shops in Rochford that deal in ‘jewellery’ I have been left pondering their merits and, even more, wondering if the inhabitants of Rochford appreciate (even if they may not be able to afford) the services being provided in this area of the town.   In Yeo’s we have found a warmth and friendliness and sheer expertise in respect of gold, diamonds and gemstones that is mind-blowing. Here in JJWD we find a similar warmth and friendliness but here it is the delicate beauty of glass which is awesome. How fortunate we are!
