Rochford Life: Kim, how long have you been working here?
Kim: Two years in this April. I’d been in retail but never in the jewellery trade, so this was quite new.

RL: But now you’re taking exams in it?
Kim: Yes, that’s right. I have passed my first Jewellery Education & Training Course, for the Professional Jewellers’ Diploma  , (JET 1 for short) and I will be taking up my Jet 2 in January.

RL: So what did you have to do for that?
Kim: It’s online and it’s the beginning of jewellery, looking at gemstones and diamonds, how to serve people, safety, and all that kind of thing. It’s quite involved and you are set five assignments with a lot of research.  We also attended a seminar at the college of the National Association of Goldsmiths  in London. They assign you a tutor so if you have any problems you can speak to them. It was time consuming and although there is a lot of research, I found it really interesting. The more you go into it, the more in depth you want to go into it. Because I so enjoyed it, I did a lot more than I needed to and I passed everything with an A+  and at my age I was really pleased with that.

RL: How many more can you do?
Kim: You can go on endlessly. You can pick up gemology, doing valuations, all sorts of things. If I carried on until the day I died, I’d never know  even half.   It’s a difficult trade but a  very, very interesting one.

RL: I expect Ken has helped you?
Kim: Ken is a fantastic tutor, if you ask him a question and he’s busy, when he’s finished what he is doing he will always stop and show you and it doesn’t mater what you ask him, on the very rare occasion he doesn’t know he will find out. You know that if there is something you don’t understand you just go and talk to Ken and you’ll get the answer and you’ll know it’s the right answer. What’s important to Ken is that his staff are qualified and knowledgeable. We are not just a jewellery retailer, we know what we’re doing. When you have the training it’s nice to know what you’re selling and to have confidence in it.

RL: Well Kim, than you very much for your time. May we wish you well with your future training.

Another Gem at Yeo’s

(19th December 2013)

We have regularly kept a watch on the changes that take place around the shops of Rochford and when chatting with Ken Massow on the subject of training for the jewellery trade, and found that one of his staff had recently done rather well with her exams, we took the opportunity to chat to her about it.  So here is Kim Gale.
