11. Introducing Behaviour

d) Where your child might be in development
  
The following might help, but remember that each child is unique and develops at their pace which may be different from your neighbour's child (who is bound to be a child prodigy!)
   
0-3 months  
Ÿ
gets head control as neck strengths
Ÿ
grasps and holds things
Ÿ
makes sounds
Ÿ
can eventually smile, show pleasure, or distress
Ÿ
is settling into routines for eating ,sleeping etc.
       
3-6 months  
Ÿ
reaches our and can grab or hold things
Ÿ
can sit up with support
Ÿ
often very social, can make noises to show feelings
Ÿ
recognises familiar objects
Ÿ
is generally beginning to recognise its environment   
       
6-9 months  
Ÿ
sits up, may be standing with help, crawls
Ÿ
may be drinking from a cup
Ÿ
recognises ‘no' and its own name
Ÿ
can express emotions of nearby children – laughter, fear
Ÿ
is becoming aware of behaviour and consequences   
       
9-12 months  
Ÿ
crawls at a pace, can stand
Ÿ
is better at grasping things
Ÿ
may co-operate in getting dressed
Ÿ
may have a few words
Ÿ
more and more aware of environment, behaviour & consequences   
          
1-2 years  
Ÿ
walks, explores, picks up & drops things
Ÿ
feeds self, becomes more able in many things
Ÿ
uses clearer language
Ÿ
becomes a toddler who is starting to have self-confidence
            
2-3 years  
Ÿ
moves around without bumping into things
Ÿ
asks simple 'what' and ‘why' questions
Ÿ
likes to help, play beside other children
Ÿ
gets bladder control

                    Remember, it's not a competition with friends' children!

Reading the Signs

a) Signs at different ages
- behaviour that shows us so easily what is happening

b) Signs of the absence of peace
- behaviour that are signs that say all is not well.

c) Signs of Childish Irresponsibility or of Wilful Rebellion
- behaviour revealing not so good attitudes

- reminder of behaviour in their different developmental stages
