Talking with some of the PARENTS of Waterman School  (17th March 2011)

These were snippets of informal conversations held in the hall of the school while the parents waited their turn to see their children’s teachers.  The objective was simply to invite each parent on their own to express their “off-the-the-top-of-the-head” opinion about the school. We asked each parent if we may quote them and without exception they were effusive about their willingness to be quoted.

Cheryl  – I have one child here in year 5 – she is very contented. She is very shy but she is very content being here; she is very happy here.
We asked what she liked about the school.  Everything! I am a parent governor and have been for about a year.
We commented that she seemed enthusiastic about the school.   Oh definitely. It is the best school in the area. The smallness of the school is a benefit. All the teachers know all the children. The personal one to one is fantastic. Since the new management team have come in a year and a half ago, the difference that it has made is tremendous and you can see it in the children. They are happier and well behaved. It’s a tremendous improvement. It is good. Rochford is a good place to live; it’s like a little village in a large town, very friendly and a nice atmosphere, and we’ve lived here five years now. .

Tracy  – I am a ‘mid-day’ and I am training to be a TA and I also have a son in year four. He’s been here since year one and I’ve noticed the difference between the two years, how we were before to how we are now. It’s been a major improvement with the new teaching team; it’s a warm and friendly atmosphere now and the children like to come to school; they want to come to school which is really good. We have more children coming in to the school, and my son is improving academically as well. I’m happy all round, and I enjoy working here, it’s a good atmosphere to work in.

Stephanie – I am a parent with four children here. I love this school. In all my years, and my eldest is now ten,  I’ve never had a problem with this school. Three of my children were special needs and they’ve now been brought up to the standard they should be.

Miranda – I’ve got two children here, my daughter in reception and my son in year two. My daughter was looking forward to coming here because she had a friend here in the Nursery and she’s really enjoyed her first year. She’s enjoyed joining clubs in the school. Yes, I’m very positive about the school.  I think it’s good and has improved greatly.  The teachers are helpful if you have any questions and there’s good organisation as well. The caretaker gets involved as well. He does Construction with the children after school. It’s really good.

Miranda’s dad, Raymond – I knew of this school before it changed its name so I was slightly apprehensive but the more I come here, the more I am impressed by what is going on. I’ve seen tremendous changes over the period of time that Joshua has been coming here and it’s improving as the years go by. It’s a very accessible school for parents and grandparents and I always come in with Miranda because she’s a lone parent, so I help her where possible. It’s very positive here, a very positive attitude which is very noticeable amongst  everybody. If there’s any difficulty with your child, anything at all, they’ll tell you and phone you direct, and that’s really good and you feel as if you’re involved.

Jaye -  I think it’s an absolutely brilliant school because it has a children’s centre now and the children are more controlled, the teachers are very, very helpful. They are interested if you have problems at home. I have one child here at present; I had two here but the older one has gone up to King Edmund’s. It’s a brilliant school. They have helped me so very much and have been supportive when we’ve had difficulties, and continue to do so.

So there we are!  We had asked the head if we could talk to parents and get their feelings and she gave us whatever space we wanted to have in the whole afternoon, and left us to it, so this was a very random choice of parents. However each and every one we talked to, readily shared their feelings. More than that, as soon as we asked what they thought about this school, every face lit up and we were immediately deluged with positive feelings about the school. We weren’t looking for negatives, which was just as well because we would have been very disappointed!  Thank you to each of you who shared with us. We didn’t take a photo of every person, simply because we got carried away  with the talk and enthusiasm! In the background there was a constant hubbub over the tea and coffee that was readily available, while the caretaker egged on the friendly conversation.  It was a warm and welcoming environment.  May it carry on like that for many a year. Oh, and thank you for the hospitality!
